Avid Reader

Mr. Edmund Quek is an avid reader who constantly keeps abreast of current economic events and issues. Apart from teaching and writing, he spends most of his time reading about economics. This enables him to teach economics with real-world examples which will not only help his students do well in economics examinations, but also understand the economic events and issues that revolve around everyday life. In doing so, he makes learning economics easy, interesting and useful for his students. The testimonials written by his former students attest to this. He gives students in-depth explanations of  economic crises which include the Great Depression of the 1930s, the European Depression of the 1980s, the Asian Financial Crisis of the late 1990s, the dot-com bubble burst of the early 2000s and the Global Financial Crisis of the late 2000s, with the view that understanding economic crises is essential for understanding economics. As Ben Bernanke once said, “If you want to understand geology, study earthquakes. If you want to understand economics, study the Great Depression.”

Good Track Record

Mr. Edmund Quek helps over 75 per cent of the students in his economics tuition classes obtain a distinction in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Economics examination nearly every year, with most of the remaining students scoring a B. Under his tutelage, many students saw their grades improve from a U to an A. In some years, the distinction rate was as high as 90 per cent. Many of his former students were awarded prestigious scholarships to read economics at prestigious universities which include Cambridge University, Stanford University, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania and University of California, Berkeley. This consistently good result is achieved in part with the help of the economics lecture notes and the economics model essays that he prepared for his students. Due to the widespread use of the lecture notes, he was invited by 938Live, an English radio station of MediaCorp in Singapore, to an interview on Economics Lecture Notes in 2013. In 2022, he was invited by South China Morning Post, an Asia’s leading English language newspaper, to an interview on the Singapore National Day Report. Over his two decade-long teaching career, he has taught over 3000 students.

Financial Assistance Scheme

Mr. Edmund Quek is aware that there are some students from needy families who are less privileged than their peers, despite the economic prosperity of Singapore. To put these students on an equal footing to compete with their more privileged peers, he provides them with free or subsidized economics tuition so long as they can justify their need for financial assistance. Generally, these students are under the Financial Assistance Scheme or whose parents are under the Public Assistance Scheme. Thus far, there have been over 70 beneficiaries which include students taking H2 economics tuition and H1 economics tuition from this financially-aided economics tuition scheme. Many of them are currently reading economics at university and hence improving their financial conditions in the future.
